The modern world that we live in has individuals constantly exposed to different tragedies, both natural and man-made. This is the reason why it is very important for individuals to take up first aid and CPR training. Depending on the needs at hand, you have a number of choices as far as the type of training you would like to engage in is concerned. Training in first aid and CPR is divided into three broad sections as listed below:

–          Training that is ideal for individuals, learning institutions as well as training that is suitable for the workplace.

–          Training for professionals in the medical field as well as pro rescuers.

–          First aid and CPR training with focus on sports, the wilderness as well as pets.

Let us look at each of the categories in greater detail so that anyone planning to go on training is well aware of what to expect.

i)                    First aid training for individuals, schools and the workplace

This is perhaps the most common category of trainees, and for the obvious reason that it does not require any professional expertise from the medical field. This course is divided into three facets: first aid, CPR and AED as well as reviewing of the same. In First Aid, just as you may have guessed, trainees learn how to attend to common injuries such as burns, cuts, grazes and sprains among many others. With CPR and AED, trainees understand how to react in the event of a breathing emergency. It is in this training session that trainees also get to use the AED (automated external defibrillator). For those who are interested, there is the option of adult, child and infant CPR. The last facet of the course involves carrying out a review of the skills learned during the first aid and CPR training. The certification period for this usually lasts 2 years.

ii)                   Training for medical professionals

This form of training targets EMTs, firefighters, physicians and nurses, basically anyone in the medical fraternity. If you work in this capacity, you are tasked with attending to cardiac and breathing emergencies up to the point where advanced medical attention is availed. Due to the nature of first aid and CPR training in this category, more advanced course topics are covered and they include:

–          Primary assessment of the victim and the scene

–          How to address choking

–          How to effectively use an AED

–          How to perform one person and two-persons CPR.

–          The use of different types of ventilation with the inclusion of bag-valve-masks, abbreviated BVMs.

iii)                 Remote first aid, sports and pets

Remote first aid and CPR is geared towards training individuals who spend a good percentage of their days in remote hard-to-reach places. As a result, this course teaches advanced techniques as places like this may be too far away from professional medical help. Sports first aid training on the other hand focuses on the provision of first aid for sports enthusiasts and is pertinent to injuries that may be obtained while playing. Pet first aid training ensures that you are well prepared to attend to pet emergencies.
